Cortaderia selloana is the scientific name of pampas grass, which is originated mainly in the Pampas, which is in the South America that is why Cortaderia selloana is known generally as Pampas grass. It grows well in full sunlight and in the warm temperature like as of the South America. It has the best feature of tolerance of any tough climate condition that is why it can grow in almost every area or territory.

Pampas grass mostly has the long height of around 8 to 12 feet but its leaves are only about 0.5 inches to 0.75 inches wide but have good height. Less wideness makes its leaves as razor or blade type sharp, which can bring out blood from your body parts by just rubbing against them. Pampas grass grows in big and solid bunches which are called as tussocks.

Almost all grasses look good when they are pruned before new leaves or grass sprout. Pampas grass grows well and looks prettier after pruning once in a year and the perfect time of pruning it is in the mid to late winter. Pruning of its old brown leaves or leaves blades makes easier for new fresh leaves to come out. However, pampas grass's pruning is not an easy task, one has to take care about some facts, which can harm and make difficult to trim.

Now the question is what the method of pruning pampas grass is. Here are some essential tips for pruning-

. Carelessness and without protection on your body, pruning will be certainly risky and injurious for you. Leaves of pamper grass are as sharp as blades, which can make cuts on naked arms, hands, faces or eyes. To avoid this condition, always wear long sleeved shirt or t-shirt, full pants or jeans, gloves and glasses for covering you face. This will protect you from the blades of pampas grass and you can cut off it, without making any cut on your body.

. Mid winter season is the best time to prune pampas grass when old leaf blades will be turn brown and dry. Trimming of these dull upper parts of grass will allow fresh leaves to come out from the top part not from the middle in the spring season. Pruning will stop spreading of excess grass because if new leaves will grow from the middle, it will certainly occupy extra area but if leaves will grow from upper part then it will increase only the height of the grass. Before mid February is the ideal time for pruning pampas grass.

. During the pruning, hold the grass with your hands, which should be covered by gloves, in small bunch and bind pampas grass with tape. By performing such actions- first thing is you can cut the grass easily and second thing, there will be no need of putting extra effort for cleaning the trimmed parts of grass.

Pruning pampas grass is the only big trouble, which can make you to work hard while it is a very less maintenance-required grass. It has good tolerance over insects and diseases, and can grow very easily. Never delay trimming for too long because long leaves will trouble you more than the small bunches. Two pounds of a slow release fertilizer for per 100 square feet is enough for getting plenty of pink feathery pretty pampas grass in less time.
